About

Our History

A tradition of charity. Still making an impact today.

As a Bon Secours donor, you're part of a legacy that started nearly 140 years ago when the Sisters of Bon Secours crossed the Atlantic from France to America in the late 1800s. They were destined to be Catholic health care pioneers.

Starting in Baltimore and expanding across the eastern half of the U.S., the Sisters identified the unique and pressing needs in each locale. And then they rallied community leaders and citizens to contribute their time, talent and treasure to help the Sisters meet those needs. The charitable giving sought by the Sisters funded the Catholic hospitals, community outreach services, affordable housing and long-term care facilities that ultimately became our own Bon Secours Health System.

The Bon Secours Baltimore Foundation follows in the footsteps of the Sisters by connecting generous donors with the causes and programs they're passionate to support, ensuring direct help is available for residents and families in West Baltimore.

Because of our donors and grant funders, Bon Secours provides a variety of programs and services that improve the quality of life and health of residents in four of the most vulnerable zip codes in Baltimore: 21223 Penrose/Fayette Street Outreach & Boyd-Booth; 21216 Mondawmin/Coppin Heights; 21217 Sandtown-Winchester/Druid Hill; and 21229 Lower Edmondson Village/Allendale.

As a donor, you support an organization whose programming decisions are informed by the community to truly address local needs. Bon Secours Community Works prides itself in coming alongside the community, with decisions made "by the community, for the community" to ensure that donor-funded programs address the local challenges and give people the help they need. Monthly meetings with the Anchor Group—leaders from local schools, churches and neighborhood associations—give an ongoing community voice in shaping the services provided by Bon Secours Community Works.

Because of donors like you, Bon Secours supports over 4,000 people a year through job training, childcare, youth programming, access to healthy foods, affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization projects. These are just a few ways donors improve lives and build a strong, healthy community here in West Baltimore.

A stronger, safer, healthier West Baltimore for everyone.
Because of you.

Not-for-profit, faith-based health care for you, your family, your community.
